Native American Heritage Day
We celebrated Native American Heritage Day last Friday by listening to our guests Mary Ellen Little Mustache, her sister Debbie, and her 85 year old father who is a Blackfoot elder from Pitcher Creek, Alberta. Mary Ellen taught our students several Native American games like: Shinny, Double Ball, Lacrosse, the Hand and Fist game, Run and Scream game, and the Ring and Stick game.
Mr. Little Mustache told many stories about his life growing up in Alberta, Canada. He learned from his family specially his grandmother the native ways but he also attended a Boarding School as a young child with French nuns teaching him non-native ways. Every student had something to bring home that they had made for a native game.
Many thanks to Mary Ellen and her family for spending the afternoon with us and teaching us about the International Native Games Society.
